Calgary Pics!

Ok, after many requests for cowgirls and the like, here are some pics from my time in Calgary! i visited downtown, Calgary Tower, Olympic Park, the Calgary Stampede ‘Sneak Peak’ evening before the start of the 10 day event.

i was tempted by these pepper mills which look like the Calgary Tower! The tower Was built in 1967-68 and is 191m tall!….. pretty old eh!

The Dancing Queen? i was wondering what they were on about? nice bike anyway!

Olympic Park – home of the 1988 (?) Calgary Winter Olympic Games.

I paid and rode down on a Flying Fox/zip wire from the top of the Ski Jump Tower you can see in the pics!… was pretty choice, got up to 80 kph they reckon.. and slam into a big stopper/braking system…. further, much further down than you can see in the photo!….

I also went for a short luge ride like this woman below.. only like 3 corners.. so not that exciting…

I found Coberger on the medals wall for 1994. I also want a Triumph Daytona 600 when i come back to NZ…. sex on wheels… almost as nice as a Ducati 916 Strada!.

Calgary – Back on Tourist Mode!

Hey y’all… =;-) . .. . . . well. its 1120pm on Thursday 5th July – tonight was the “sneak-peak” evening of the annual Calgary Stampede – “the greatest outdoor show in the world” is the catch-phrase!

Well, what can i say – i spent 5 hours wondering around, taking in the carnival atmostphere, cowgirls, agricultural displays, BMX rodeo, dirty ‘fun food’, pink hats/shirts/banadanas (to support breast cancer awarenss) – and generally some good ol fashioned country bands, tunes, meat market tent concerts… and yeah! what a blast!

I’ll say this once, and i’ll say it again – there is definitely something romantic about the whole ‘country’ thing i reckon – from the chicks in boots/jeans/singlets/hats and dolled up, the men in their buff tees, hard jawlines and big belts, blacksmith competitions, clydesdales, to the whole hot young country singer (beautiful voice!) and her 3 piece band!!… theres something cool about it all…… OK, you can hassle me all you want but seriously, if you ever decide to come to Calgary, do it during STAMPEDE (the population basically doubles!) .. it is a 10 day festival which i’m actually going to MISS cos tonight is the teaser, it all rocks off 2moro, and i’m off to Fernie for my bike trip!… not before i take in some more local cultures!

It might sound stupid, but yeah it is a different world, and i can appreciate it for what it is. …. the only creepy thing i ran into was this 80 yo guy who was watching this concert, we kinda got talking and he said this little 5 yo kid running around was his… DANG!… seemed genuine too! he was born in 1927…. =/ should have gotten a photo with him for laughs!… creepy…. his ‘what i assumed mother of his child’ looked like she was on smack and out of a trailer… more dang!…….

Ok – What Else? I went to Olympic Park this arvo too – spent loads of money, did a massive flying fox ride from the ski-jump tower! Yesterday was the familiarize myself with the power walking around town! – i found chinatown again…. man, thats 3 this trip!… and ate myself full of BBQ pork buns and pinapple buns too! i seem to be going for those every time cos they are sooo cheap at less than $1 a pop!

Pop – soda – soft drink… yeah, that is something a bit different! pop machine, pop fountain, soda?…. i’m getting used to walking on the right hand side of the footpath, and starting to get the hang of looking left when i cross the road!
